Get started in Teide

Teide is designed to quick connect to the database, to examine, analyse, edit, transform and create it in simplest way.

To start working with Teide:

  • Install Teide,
  • Run Teide.
When you first start Teide asks you to specify connection string – name of MS SQL server. By default Teide tries to connect to MS SQL server on the same computer where it was started.
  • Use it

With the running of Teide you will see several panels. On the left side you can specify database and see list of tables. In the center you can see main working area: there you can preview tables, and open them. On the right side you can see properties of table, field list and relations.

List of tables

teide-02

As soon as you select list of tables, in Ribbon panel you will see icons related to tables:

Table data

You can see and make simple operations with data in table: group fields, sort table, filter table, move and hide columns.

You can update data in the table:

Add row: Add new row. When you add row, all not null fields are filled with empty or zero values. All fields which takes unique value (e.g. Primary Key) are filled by unique value (new GUID, counter for integer and string fields)

Delete rows: all selected rows delete. Changes will be applied only after push “Save changes”. Deleted rows will be restored if you decide to push “Decline changes”.

Save changes: confirm of saved changes (add rows, delete rows, change value in cells)

Decline changes: decline any changes.

Copy: copying data to Clipboard

Paste: it is very useful and smart procedure. It insert table data from Clipboard. It can be data from Excel or Web-page etc. If you selected specific area, only this area will be filled. If you selected only one cell, complete table will be pasted. But if there are no enough columns or rows for inserted table, new columns and rows in the table will be added.

Set null: all selected cells will get null value

Set new GUID: all selected cells will get new GUID (36-char string with global unique identifier).

Set counter value: all selected cells will get new number. It is applicable for string and integer columns. Several cells can be selected in one column only.

Export data to file: save current table and table scheme (data format) to XML file.

Import data from file: open current table from XML file.

Save to new table: current table will be saved to new table of database. Please specify new table name in page “Table property”.

Data structure

The table in right part of window shows list of fields (columns) in data table.teide-06

In this table you can find and correct properties of data table fields (columns):

Primary key: means that this field (or fields marked this flag) have unique value in the table. For comparison, in Excel you can find rows by its number of line. The difference is that in Excel you can sort your table and rows will change its number. But in relational tables normally primary key values aren’t changed.

Name: name of column

Type: most general type is “nvarchar”, it is string type. If you want to store only numeric or integer or some other data type, select other type. Difference from Excel is that you can save string to numeric field. But here you cannot do it. Value should be in exactly defined type.

Length: it is length of field. This field is applicable to string and numeric types.

Collation: this option is for string types only, it is related to rule of string comparison. If you don’t technical specialist use default or empty value.

Add field: creation of new field (column). It will be reflected in the table after changes saving.

Delete field: delete field (column) from table.

Save changes: all changes including adding of new fields, deleting of fields, renaming of fields, changing of field type, changes in Primary key will be reflected in the table.

Decline changes: all made changes will be cancelled.

Operations

Now you can see very basic operations with tables. In the future we intend to significantly expand this set of operations.teide-08

Open table: it is the same as you would double click on table in table list. Currently selected table will be opened in new window.

Open blank table: new empty table will be opened. The table will include three fields: _id – unique identified of row, _pos – position of row, _timestamp – time of changing any value in row.

Open SQL query: write SQL query in command window, select it, and then your query will be opened in new window.

Execute non-query SQL: use this command if you want to execute SQL script which doesn’t return query.

File

teide-09

Connection: describes connection settings to database

Quick table preview: defines if selected table will show in preview window

Load commands: loads text file to command window

Save commands: saves content of command window to text file
